About the Band
You could call them a throwback. To the days before auto-tune, pitch correction, and un-human overdubs. Faced with the options in the studio, the band turned them down in exchange for the real deal. The true tone of human voices, and the real sound of unfiltered Marshall Stacks.
The low grumbling of lead singer/guitar player Josh Davis combines with feminine harmony of drummer Maria Sweeney, and hitting a note above it all bass player Andrew Freid chimes in to create pitch perfect harmonies above fuzz pedals and a thrashing guitar riff.
Gentle hills, powerful sunsets, ponds, forests, peace, quiet, and transcendentalism battle with crashing cars, black out drinking, loose, hard, and heartbreaking women, forces of good, evil, redemption, and rejection.
A combination of mid to fast past unique and standard rock drum beats from Sweeney, Allows Freid to dart around on the bass, and Davis to playing chunky guitar riffs and grungy chord progression- with a riff, or solo tossed in.
There is nothing jagged- nothing discordant- nothing to take you away from the positive flow of your mind.
It’s like a more intimate, more direct Pixies vibe- The songs have great riffs, hooks, choruses, and harmonies- Sweeney even takes over on lead vocals on a couple of songs. With multiple voices flying around, and Freid’s Enwhistle inspired Bass rolls, dynamic narratives of life, love, lust, and struggle are told.
The Olde Maids would fit right in with Willie Nelson and Neil Young at Farm Aid. Their songs are like grunged up tales about going back and forth from the country and the city, sobriety drunkenness, in love. Davis’ guitar storytelling and guitar style conjure up both, Willie, Neil, and Crazy Horse.
